CITY ARMORIAL BEARINGS

Sir—l would have written earlier on the subject of the city’s proposed coat-of-arms, but I felt that some public protest would have been made against the new design by people who were capable of expressing an opinion. But the remarks of “ Civis ” in Saturday morning's paper seem to me to be just right and well up to the standard of his usual clever comments. The design seems to be crude and badly drawn, and I do not see why Maoris and Highlanders (Cameron or otherwise) should be mixed up in a design for a coat-of-arms. Let the people of Dunedin have something they can be proud of, not something that will be a source of amusement to our visitors to the centennial celebrations.—X am, etc., Try Again.

Sir, —As one of the younger businessmen of this city who had hoped to see Dunedin secure a coat-of-arms worthy of it, I must protest strongly against the “Alice in Wonderland ” caricature which has received the blessing of the Mayor and council. Why the haste and why the secrecy which surrounded the whole proceeding? Why no effort to appeal for a suitable motto? I don’t want to quarrel with Professor Adam’s idea, but very few people, apart from Latin scholars, could make sense of it. As the coat-of-arms at present stands, the council has perpetrated the joke of the century, and no amount of “ doctoring ” at Edinburgh will make it anything but what it is—a plaster.—l am, etc., Disgusted.
