REQUEST EXPLAINED

‘AID FOR YUGOSLAVIA DENIAL OF FOOD DEMAND Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 29. The Yugoslav Ambassador in London, M. Lubo Leontitch, denied that Yugoslavia had asked Britain to supply her with £15.000,000 worth of food and materials. Yugoslavia had, however, asked what part, of the £15,000,000 which the United Nations Technical Committee recommended should, be given to Yugoslavia for relief, would be supplied by Britain? Yugoslavia had lent 20,000 tons of wheat to Rumania and 10,000 to Albania because she could not see her neighbours starving. He objected to the comparisons of the British iand. Yugoslav rations. The prolonged drought over the past two years had created serious deficiencies for Yugoslavs, whose diet consisted mainly of bread, and who would starve if Bread was unavailable. Yugoslavia' therefore asked for British support for its request to U.N.R.R.A. for 200,000 tons of wheat. . '

Reuter's diplomatic correspondent stated in a message on Saturday that the British Government had received remarkable requests from Yugoslavia. One communication, he said, stated that Yugoslavia required £15,000.000 worth, of food and other materials, and asked Britain to take steps to provide it. The second communication asked that an immediate request for 200.000 tons of food should be passed on to U.N.R.R.A. ■
