COTTON GOODS
AMERICAN PROPOSAL MANUFACTURE IN JAPAN AND GERMANY Special WELLINGTON, Mar. 30. Consideration is being given to an American proposal that New Zealand and Australia should purchase cotton goods" manufactured in Japan and tne American zone of Germany from raw materials supplied,- by the- United States. There are considerable difficulties, .however, in the way of carrying out this proposition. The American proposal is understood to carry with it the requirement that the goods should be paid for in dollars. These could probably be obtained only, through Britain, whose dollar resources are dwindling. Further, it has yet to be : determined that the goods would be suitable for New Zealand purposes. The Government is reported to have the matter under consideration and discussion with the wholesale trade. . Also involved is the possibility of obtaining about £1,000,000 worth of heavy cotton materials from Germany within the next 12 months as part of her share of war reparations. Textiles may also come to New Zealand from Japan as reparations. The materials coming from Germany, arriving probably about the end of the year, are coarse and heavy weaves for working clothes and similar purP °Continued shortage of textiles from Britain is apparent, and it may be some time before New Zealand’s requirements can be overtaken.
