HAZLETT STABLE’S SUCCESS

FOUR WINNERS DURING DAY , Special to Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Mar. 30. The Hazlett stable had a royal innings at the Birchwood Hunt meeting at Invercargill yesterday, when it was represented by four winners during the day. Irish Wit and Geniality were responsible for fine exhibitions of jumping to win the Hazlett Memorial and Gardner Memorial. Steeplechases respectively. Kassai outclassed the field in the Hunters’ Flat Handicap and the stablemates Aurora Australis and Black Light finished first and second in the chief event, the President’s Handicap. The Hazlett Memorial Steeplechase soon developed into a contest between Filibeg, Irish Wit, and Tamerlane, wtih the others completely spreadeagled. Filibeg had a commanding lead in the early part, but with five furlongs to run he was headed by Irish Wit, with Tamerlane a couple of lengths back. Irish Wit was first over the last fence from Filibeg, with Tamerlane handy, but the last-named fell. Irish Wit stayed on to beat Filibeg by a length, with Alpine 25 lengths back third. Gold Robe was a poor fourth. The stablemates Aurora Australis and Black Light fought out the finish of the President's Handicap, with Aurora Australis finishing the better to get the decision by three-quarters of a length. Pensacola made the running for six furlongs and at the half mile Black Light took over, with Wild Cry, Red Prize, Pride of Mossburn and Aurora Australis handy, while Pensacola went back through his field. Black Light was clear of Wild Cry into the straight, where Aurora Australis was well in the picture ahead of Pride of Mossburn, Foxchase, Solver, and Red Prize. In the run home Black Light was headde by Aurora Australis in the last 50 yards, and the last-named came on to win well. Pride of Mossburn was a length and a-half back third, with Foxchase a good fourth ahead of Wild Cry, Solver. Linloch, Aganev, Hunting Charm, Red Prize, and Pensacola.
