CITY RESERVES

NO IMPROVEMENT LIKELY DIFFICULTIES OF DEPARTMENT In view of the many complaints that are received by the council relative to grass and weed growth in the various cemeteries and reserves throughout the city, the Reserves Committee in its report to be submitted to a meeting of the City Council on Monday night states that it has considered it advisable to make a statement on this matter.

Apart from the recreation reserves and playgrounds, which are regularly mown by machines, there are considerable rough areas that can be dealt with only by scything, the report states. Men experienced in this type of work are now very difficult to find and, in addition, the funds available for the work permit of only one cutting each year. Owing to the wet season, the growth in some areas is excessive. The work occupies a gang of five men the whole year, plus additional assistance during the summer months. The annual cost for the cemeteries is £IOOO and on other reserves and the town belt £3OOO. Until more funds are available and additional experienced labour obtained % , the position cannot be improved.
