AWARDS DELAYED
COASTAL SHIPS’--OFFICERS STRONG MEASURES THREATENED .A. AUCKLAND, Mar. 17. Angered by lengthy delays in the release of their new awards, the New Zealand coastal shipping officers have informed the Minister of Labour, Mr McLagan, that unless they are issued by April 2 they will take action. Although they hope that strong measures will not be necessary, merchant officers are prepared to back up their virtual ultimatum by bringing the coastal fleet to a standstill after that date.
Two awards are involved. One covers masters and officers employed by the Union Steam Ship .Company and the second covers the other members of the New Zealand Merchafit Service Guild Industrial Union of Workers in the coastal service. Negotiations so far have occupied 14 months. Applications were heard by the Arbitration Court in September and again in February, when it was announced that the results would be issued in a few days. When the grievance of the officers was placed before the ’ Minister of Labour he stated that the awards would be released by April 2. The officers have now decided that this must be the deadline.
