The appointment of Mr A. R. Tarr, of the district traffic manager's office, Wellington, to succeed Mr S. Roscoe as general secretary of the New Zealand Railway .Officers' Institute, was announced yesterday. Mr Roscoe has retired because of continued ill health.

Mr James Ramsay, formerly of Dunedin, who is now a resident of Vancouver, Is at present on a visit to his home. Mr Ramsay, during the war, was in charge of the reconditioning of German merchant ships captured at Dakar. Mr W. S. Bennett, who has had 56 years’ service with Dalgety and Co.,- will retire on March 31. Mr Bennett joined the company’s service at Rockhampton in 1891. .He was appointed manager of Townsville branch in 1906, Wellington in 1910, and superintendent for New Zealand in 1928. He, transferred from New Zealand to Australia to take up duties as Australian superintendent in 1936. He will be succeeded by Mr 1 K. R. Elder, who joined the company in Sydney in 1910. After filling several positions in the company’s Sydney branch, Mr Elder was appointed manager in South Australia in 1940. For the past 12 months she has been attached to the superintendent’s department as assistant superinendent. Passengers who left by air for the north yesterday were:—Mr F» S. Laycock, Mr W. McGie, Mr C. N. Bell, Mr R. C. Greenslade, Mr C. J. Rowley, Miss N. Helliwell, Mr R. H.. Bartell, Mr H. J. Luff (Wellington), Mr E. S. Nichol, Miss A. M. Lonie, Mr J. L. Jones, Miss G. Heyward, and Mr F. Hitchens (Auckland). Those who arrived from the north were:—Mrs Wallace, Mr E. Heath, Mr M. Christmas, Miss D. Carter, Mr and Mrs G, Carter, Miss S. Croy, Mr J. O’Brien, Mr Veitch, Mrs E. Bartley, Mr A. E. Wallace, Mr K. Blow, Mrs I. Macfarlane.' Passengers for the south were:-—Mr and Mrs R. Cruser, Mrs G. Place, Mrs O. Smith, Mrs M. Glenny, Mrs A. Annan and Mr E. Sheed.
