CUSTOMS STAFF
PROMOTIONS ANNOUNCED Consequent on recent retirements in the Customs Department, promotions have been announced. The appointment of Mr F. G. Haigh as Collector of Customs at Dunedin - has been confirmed as from May 30 last, on which date he assumed his; new duties. Mr Haigh joined the de-> partment as a cadet at Dunedin in 1908, and in 1917 transferred to the’ head office in Wellington, where for; some years he was in charge of the’ statistical branch. After a period as examining officer on the Wellington wharf, he returned to Dunedin in 1924 and was for 22 years associated with the waterfront office of the depart-' ment. •: Mr E. S. Gale, examining officer at Dunedin, has been promoted to one of the senior positions as chief inspec-. tor attached to the head office in Wei-; lington.. With the exception of a few years in the statistical branch in Wellington, Mf Gale has spent all his service in Dunedin, where he joined the. department as a cadet in 1915. As. officer in charge" of the sales tax branch for several years, he is well known to many in the .business community. He will have associated with . him as assistant inspector Mr W. J. !: McStay, also of the Dunedin staff, who joined the, department in Invercargill’ in 1915, and was well known as collector at Oamaru for some years. Mr D. R. McDonald, examining officer at Dunedin, becomes assistant sub- - collector ’ in Welllington. Mr H. R. White, at present collector at Greymouth, will take over the position of sub-collector- at! Dunedin in succession., to: Mr H. S. Tily, Who recently retired • on superannuation after 41 years’ service with the department.
