UNOCCUPIED HOUSES
NEEDS OF SERVICEMEN ACTION BY LANDLORDS DEMANDED P.A. WELLINGTON, Mar. 13. After a debate by the executive committee of the Ned Zealand Returned Services’ Association concerning returned servicemen and housing, during which the distressing conditions under which some families are living was stressed, the following motion was carried;— . .... In view of the serious state of emergency which has ariseii in the housing situation and the figures disclosed at the last census in relation to the number of unoccupied houses and “baches” throughout the country, namely, 7036 and 10,775 respectively, the«owners of such dwellings be required to find tenants for them within two months, or, in default, tenants be found hy the Government, the basis of allocation to be at least 50 per cent to returned service personnel.” It was appreciated that the question of maintenance and repossession- in certain circumstances would need, to be provided for on lines similar to those in the legislation of Tasmania. A sub-committee was deputed to formulate proposals in regard to housing from a Dominion point of view for consideration by the forthcoming meeting of the Dominion council of the association.
