A DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT
P.A. WELLINGTON. Mar. 13. “Man finds that his greatest trouble is man himself. His own human nature is making it nearly impossible for him to fit himself into the dangerous environment that he has created with his genius in the material sciences,” declared' Rear-admiral R. E. Byrd, last night, when speaking at a reception to the-officers of the United States' Antarctic fleet. -
Admiral Byrd stressed that ,his views were personal ones, and were not approved by Washington. As he saw it, freedom the world over was on the defensive. The human race had destroyed its isolation before it was ready for integration, because man, during the past 30 to 40 years, had been changing the things about him faster'; thati he could fit himself into his new environment.
Now the atomic bomb made a world organisation for peace based upon justice even more deperately needed. Probably the only way to save freedom and Christianity was to begin to practice. “However,” he added, ‘ a potential enemy must also practise Christianity, and until he does, freedom must make itself firm and strong. The answer to ‘ Right is might is ‘ Right plus might.’ ”
