Paterson were associated In a valuable partnership, Paterson being undefeated at the, close of the innings 8 with 39 (including, seven 4’s) A. Gilchrist, a slow left-hand bowler, struck a good length and dismissed the last five King s batsmen for 17 runs. One of Southland’s opening batsmen. T. H. Pickard made 34 in good style before he was dismissed lbw by Cunningham but most of the best bats were out 8 cheaply. W. A. Payne knocked up 23 and Gilchrist showed himself to be a useful all-rounder by attacking tne bowling to score a Sound 26. L Curmingham and W. F.
