CRICKET

. OAMARU A IN UNBEATABLE POSITION With one game to play to finish the 1946-47 senior cricket competition in North Otago, Oamaru A is in an unbeatable position with 30 points. Waitaki is in second place with 24J points and Union third with 24 points. It appears that Waitaki will have to default its game to Union, which will take Union up ip 29 points, one point behind the winners. The competition this season has been keen and this is the first season since the end of the war that cricket in North Otago has regained its popularity. It was pleasing to see that a country team, Kurow, entered for the senior competition in Oamaru, and this team has done remarkably well, considering that it has not the same training facilities in grounds that the town teams have. In the junior grade, Union is in the lead with 25 points, followed bv St. Kevin’s 22|, Oamaru 19J. and Waitaki B 18J. The ultimate outcome of this grade is Still doubtful, as there are still games to be played which could easily reverse the present position. Union with 27J points is the lead in the Third Grade competition, followed by Waitaki A 22, and Waitaki B 16. At present it appears as if Union will win this grade, but with games still to be played, Waitaki A could reverse the situation. , A remarkable bowling average was attained by a schoolboy, Wills, playing foist. Kevin’s against Waitaki in the junior grade last Saturday. Wills took nine wickets for 33 runs, including the “ha* trick.” i Batsmen’s scores last Saturday were again very low, only seven scoring over 30 runs, the highest score, 61, being made by. Kinder for Union. It is interesting to note that Waitaki made 204 for eight wickets against Kurow, the highest team score for the day, and this bears out the writer’s theory that more practice would prove an advantage. Because ,of the Otago v. M.C.C. game on Saturday cricket in all grades has been postponed till Saturday, March 22. Representative Team
