IRRIGATION EXPERIMENT

REPORT TO PROGRESS LEAGUE

Mr A. C. Hurst reported to the North Otago Progress League on Wednesday night that the irrigation farm at Awamoko was going fairly well, but unfortunately it was an irrigation farm without water. Last webk they wanted to irrigate, but instead of 50 heads in the race, they could get only 4 or 5. and that was not enough for stock, let alone irrigation. They were told that the race could supply the Pukeuri Freezing Works only. The trouble, Mr Hurst said, was caused by the hydro-electric works. At certain periods of the day the water in the river rose 2 feet 6 inches in less than half an hour. They put in sandbags at the race intake, but the flood came down and washed the work away. It seemed hard on ratepayers of the Waitaki County to have to spend money i n keeping the intakes open. Mr Hurst made it clear that they did not intend to take water away from stock, but wanted surplus water only. The new grass on the farm was coming away well, but they wanted water urgently.

Mr Hurst was thanked for his report, the question of assisting in representations to be made to the Minister being left to the executive.
