CRITICISM EXPECTED

LABOUR PARLIAMENTARIANS PARTY SPLIT UNLIKELY Rec. 11 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 10. “ From their differing points of view, the Conservatives and Liberals and some Labour members will probably upbraid the Government during the three-day debate on economic affairs which is to begin in the House of Commons to-day,” says the parliamentary correspondent of The Times. “It is certain that there will be Labour critics of the Government, but there are two good reasons why any sort of group demonstration is unlikely. One is the Opposition’s amendment expressing no confidence in the Government. This is bound to unite Labour. The other is the meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party in the morning, which Mr Attlee will attend. The Times, in a leading article, says the realities of the country’s economic plight will give the debate a . sombre significance, but there is nothing in the agenda for British recovery which cannot be triumphantly achieved, given the right leadership and the right response. Faced with enlightened self-discipline and co-operation, the difficulties will not impede a return to former standards of living and an advance beyond.

The Times urges greater readiness, especially by the party in power, to recognise that no one group has a monopoly of wisdom or benevolence in the pursuit of social and economic advance.
