SAVAGE OFFENSIVE

.COMMUNISTS IN MANCHURIA DRIVE AIMED AT CAPITAL Rec. 8 p.m. NANKING, Feb. 27. Government ‘ field despatches state that nearly 125,000 Chinese Communists launched a savage new offensive in Manchuria, driving to within 15 miles of the capital Changchun. The Government’s Central News Agency said the Communists, with a limited number of tanks and armoured trucks, had overrun Nungan, 32 miles north of Changchun, and Kutai, 30 miles north-east of Changehun. Advance units then drove south to Wanpaishan, 15 miles north of the capital. The Communist drive places their advance guard more than 45 miles south of the Sungari River, which served as an unofficial dividing line between the Government and Communist forces during the winter. Military observers believe that the Changchun garrison, which includes the Government’s powerful new First Arrny, is strong enough to withstand any immediate threat to the capital.
