A BUSY TIME

ST. CLAIR SURF CLUB FIRE-FIGHTING AND RESCUES Members of the St. Clair Surf Lifesaving Club had a busy time in providing first aid and acting as firefighters at Oreti Beach, Invercargill, and in rescuing three persons from the surf at St. Clair during last week-end Senior and women members of the club went to Invercargill to assist at the Oreti Surf Club’s carnival. When a man fell from a horse and broke his arm, Miss Chris Knowles, of the St. Clair Club, a qualified member of the St. John 'Ambulance Association, rendered first aid. The following day some marram grass on the Oreti Beach caught fire and with a strong wind fanning the flames, the Oreti clubhouse was threatened. The St. Clair Club members helped the home club to stop the blaze 100 yards from the building by cutting a firebreak. The skeleton beach patrol left at Dunedin had plenty to do, rescuing two persons who were stranded on the sand bar about 50 yards from shore at 12.30 on Sunday afternoon, and were unable to swim back through the current. At 2.30 p.m., a boy was caught in the rip and carried seawards before the emergency team pulled him out of the water safely. The third rescue of the day was that of a boy who was carried out to sea about 5 p.m. on a “ surf-o-plane.” Two members of the club who went to his assistance were obliged to call for a belt to cope with the heavy current running. , ■ • _•
