NO GAMBLING

HOSPITAL FINANCES “There is enough gambling in the country without encouraging any more,” declared a delegate at the conference -of the New Zealand Hospital ■Boards’ Association yesterday, when a remit from Opotiki suggested that “to reduce the overwhelming cost of hospital costs and maintenance upon the taxpayers, the Government be urged to institute art unions similar to the Brisbane Golden Casket.” “Gambling for hospital finance does not produce wealth,” added the delegate, “taxation is preferable.” A number of delegates objected to the remit on the principle that they could not condone gambling. “Money went out of New Zealand to Australia for years in support of gambling," one delegate reminded he confernece. “That money has been lost to us.” The remit was lost.
