VISITOR TO DUNEDIN STUDY OF FACILITIES Mr Lionel Roy McColvin, F.L.A.. the librarian of the City of Westminster, arrived in Dunedin last night in the course of a tour of New Zealand and Australia, during which he is studying town and country library facilities. Mr McColvin is the author of a particularly challenging report on the scope and state, of the library service throughout the British Isles. Mr McColvin entered the Croyden Public Libraries in 1911 as a junior assistant, remaining with that institution for 10 years, during which time he also served in the First World War with the Bth Border Regiment. In 1921 he left Croyden to take up the position of deputy librarian at Wigan, and was then appointed chief librarian at Ipswich Public Library at the time of the opening of the new Central Library in that city. In 1931 he was appointed Borough Librarian of Hampstead. He has been honorary secretary of the Library Association since 1933 Mr McColvin has contributed widely to professional literature. His chief works are “ Music in Public Libraries,” “ The Theory of Book Selection,” “ Library Extension Work and Publicity,” “ Libraries and the Public," “British Libraries,” and a “Survey of Libraries.” In addition, he has contributed numerous articles to British and American professional periodicals. Mr McColvin and local library officers will be the guests of the Mayor. Mr Cameron, at afternoon tea to-day.
