SUSPENDED FROM COMMUNIST
PARTY ‘ (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 7. . Mr Harold Wells, the retiring president of the Miners’ Federation, who announced last night that he would not recontest the presidency, has been suspended from all positions in the Communist Party, including his seat on the Central Committee#. Mr Wells fell foul of the party, because he failed to keep himself financial in the Miners’ Federation and because in spite of the determined Communist attempt which resulted in his renomination being approved, he decided not to stand again. He was called before the Political Committee of the Communist Party and notified of his suspension. This operates until the next meeting of the Central Committee, in March, when the position will be reviewed, as the Central Committee is the only body which has the power of restoration or of complete expulsion. The leadership of the Miners’ Federation Is. regarded as one of the vital key positions held by the party. During the industrial upheaval of 1945, Mr Wells was regarded as one of the big three Communist leaders.
