LADY O’LEARY

INTEREST IN PLUNKET WORK Lady O’Leary, whose husband, the Chief Justice of New Zealand, Sir Humphrey O’Leary, received a knighthood in the New Year Honours, was born in Wellington, and is the daughter of early pioneers, Mr and Mrs James Gallagher. Her interest in public affairs has extended over a number of years, and during the war she»worked indefatigably on behalf of the A.N.A. Club (Army, Navy and Air Force Club), of which she was a foundation executive member and official hostess. She was also an organiser of a group which packed parcels for prisoners of war under the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Lady O’Leary has always taken a special interest in the Plunket Society, and it was she who started a sub-committee of the society at Thorndon. For some time she was president of this committee. For more than 21 years she has been a member of the Wellington Women’s Club, and a member of the Victoria League for an even longer period The Chief Justice and Lady O'Leary have one son, who is at present studying at the Redemptorist Monastery In Ballarat, Australia, but they have also begn foster-parents since 1918 of an orphaned nephew and niece.
