Monday, January 6 (Before. Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) Drunkenness Victor Percy Naylor, a statutory first offender, was convicted and fined 10s on a charge of drunkenness, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. On a second charge of incurring curative expenses amounting to £3 14s 4d, the defendant was convicited and ordered to pay the amount, in default 14 days’ imprisonfnent. Labourer Remanded On a charge of converting to his own use a motor car valued at £325, the property of Stuart Watson, on December 30, James Leon Lewis, a labourer, aged 31, described by the police as being of no fixed abode, was remanded till January 13. —The police stated that the accused was at present in hospital. Charge of Theft Raymond Hanna Lavender, a labourer, aged 31, was charged with the theft on September 6 of a wristlet watch, valued at £6 6s 6d, the property of James Turi Kingi Dodds, and was remanded until January 9. Term of Imprisonment Lawrence Leonard William Nicholas, a farm hand, aged 24, described as being of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to charges of intent' to defraud by means of a ialse pretence by falsely representing at Dunedin on September 25 that he had an account at the Bank of New Zealand and had won £79 at the races and obtaining a suit of clothes from John Carnavan, valued at £7. He was also charged with the theft at Kaitangata of a soldier’s pay book and £4 4s in money, the property of Stanley Daniel Greene, on September 28—The defendant was convicted and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment at the Mount Crawford Prison, Wellington, on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. ,He was remanded to appear at Wellington on a charge of the theft of £B2 3s 9d from Albert Fry Falconer. A charge of being a rogue and a vagabond in that he attempted to impose on a private individual was withdrawn by the police.—The chief detective, Mr T. Y. Hall, said that on September 27 the defendant, under the name of Warren Vaughan, was invited to Greene's house, and stayed overnight. He entered Greene’s bedroom and took his pay book, containing money. On December 14 he came to Dunedin and booked in at an hotel. He left owing £6 16s 6d. On December 25, under the name of Val Warren, he was befriended by a fireman and taken on board the ship Somerset, _ where he was given his meals on Christmas Day. He was introduced to a greaser named Carnavan, and represented that he had an'account at the Bank of New Zeland and had won £79 at the races. He said he would have to cash a cheque, and on this representation was allowed by Carnavan to take away a suit valued at £7.—On Deremher 20 the defendant booked in at Wood s Hotel as the brother of Johnny Wiggins, a jockey He said he had an aunt in Auckland from whom he would be able to' secure a flat for the son of the proprietor of the hotel. He said he had sent a telegram at a cost of 8s 3d. which he endeavoured to claim from the proprietor The oronrietor refused to Day the money. Mr *Hall added that the defendant was # a single man. with a number of convictions for theft, and was a shiftless type of individual.
