PLAY ABANDONED

MATCH AT OAMARU (Special) OAMARU, Jan.- 5. Heavy rain which commenced at the afternoon tea adjournment in the second day’s play of the North OtagoWest Coast match yesterday caused the abandonment' of the match, in which, because of rain in the morning, only eight overs had been bowled. A late start was made in the afternoon when the weather cleared. The pitch was drying out and was exceptionally tricky, causing the downfall of the West Coast batsmen who opened their innings. Four runs were gained in the morning’s play, and the .score board 20 minutes after the commencement of afternoon play showed the loss of four wickets without additional score. The remainder of the wickets fell very cheaply, the West Coasters being all out for 39 runs. The visitors followed on with their second innings, and when play was abandoned were two wickets down for 21 runs, i A different wicket was used in the afternoon, and, although this was not of much help to the Coast batsmen, they batted with far more confidence.
