SURPRISINGLY EASY

WELLINGTON'S SUCCESS MARGIN OF 132 RUNS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 4. Expecting a fight in the Plunket Shield match which would probably decide the winner of the shield, a fair number of spectators saw the start of the day’s play at the Basin Reserve in perfect weather, but their keenness was rewarded by seeing only 22 balls bowled and a surprisingly easy win for Wellington by 132 runs. Burgess and Burtt started the day for Canterbury, with three wickets in hand and a deficit of 143 runs. Off the second ball from O’Neill, Burgess snicked one to Wilson in the slips, and Burtt did the same off the first ball of O’Neill’s second over, McVicar taking the catch. Small produced some good shots, but a tendency to flick at off balls brought five slips In line, and finally saw him snick to the wicket-keeper, Tindill, to end Canterbury’s Innings after 15 minutes’ play this morning, and after a total time of 304 minutes. O’Neill, swinging and turning off, and Wilson, moving to the off, troubled the late batsmen, who did not leave the rising balls alone.
