COMPLETE SUCCESS

OPERATION ON YOUNG GIRL NAIL REMOVED FROM LUNG PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 1. Dr C. L. Jackson successfully removed a two-inch nail from the lung of Shirley Skinner, 16-year-old Melbourne girl, using the famed Jackson bronchoscope at the Temple University Hospital. Dr Jackson said that Shirley came through the operation “ in fine shape.” After 10 days’ rest, Shirley and her mother will return to Australia. The sum of £2500 was raised by public subscription in Melbourne to allow Shirley Skinner and her mother to travel by plane to the United States for the operation, which was accepted by Dr Jackson after he had examined the X-ray results, sent to him in advance. It is believed that Shirley swallowed the nail when three years of age, but it was not until last June that a severe haemorrhage led to its discovery.
