CONTROL OF DAIREN

RUSSIAN RIGHTS DISPUTED (Rec. 10 p.m.) NANKING, Dec. 30. A Foreign Office spokesman, Mr George Yeh, told a press conference that the Chinese Government does nqt recognise Russia’s right to the continued occupation of Dairen, considering that Russia surrendered the right to control Dairen on May 23 when the Soviet Embassy formally notified China that all Russian troops had been withdrawn from the north-east provinces, “of which Dairen is certainly an integral part.” (Russia claims that the Soviet-China Treaty of August, 1945, gave Russia control of Dairen during the war with Japan, which technically continues until the Japanese peace treaty is signed.) Mr Yeh said that the Chinese Government does not think a state of war with Japan exists.
