SIR JAMES HIGHT

(Daily Times Special Service.) CHRISTCHURCH, 'Jan. 1. A well-known figure in the academic life of Canterbury for more than 40 years, Sir James Hight was rector of

Canterbury University College from 1928 until 1940 when he retired from the rectorship to continue as professor of history at the college. Sir James was born at Halswell in 1870 and received his education at the Malvern District High School. He entered the Christchurch Training College in 1891 and the same year began his studies at Canterbury University College. He graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1893, gaining a senior university scholarship in English and French and a Tinline Scholarship in English. He graduated Master of Arts in 1894 with double first-class honours in English jand in French. His work on the staff of the Canterbury University College began in 1901 when he was appointed lecturer in constitutional history and political economy. In 1904 he became a fellow of the Royal Economic Society. He received the degree of Doctor of Literature from the University of New Zealand in 1906, being the first recipient of the degree. He became professor of history and 'economics in 1909 and since the division of the chair in 1920 has been professor of history. In 1934 he was made chairman of the Academic Board of the University of New Zealand and became pro-chan-cellor of the university in 1938. MISS M. J. JEFFERY Miss Minnie Johns Jeffery, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. Jeffery, was a nurse trainee at Dunedin. During the Great War she served with the N.Z.A.N.S. in Egypt, on a hospital ship in the Mediterranean, and in England. During her nursing career she has been connected with the Department of Health, for a short time in Auckland and later in Dunedin, where she filled the position of senior nurse inspector for the OtagoSouthland district for a number of years. MR ALAN MULGAN Mr Alan Edward Mulgan, who recently retired from the position of supervisor of talks for the National Broadcasting Service, has been connected with 'journalism in New Zealand all his life. He was on the literary staffs of the Auckland Star and the Christchurch Press, and was subsequently literary editor of the Auckland Star,' resigning from that position in 1935 to join the staff of the Broadcasting Board. In addition to articles in newspapers and periodicals, he has had published books of verse, plays, and New Zealand historical works. MR P. J. TWOMEY (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 1. Mr P. J. Twomey has been well known throughout New Zealand for many years for his work as secretary of the Leper Trust Board (Inc.), which has raised large sums for the amelioration of the conditions of the lepers at the colony on Makogai Island. Mr Twomey estimates that his own collecting efforts since he first became interested in leper welfare 16 years ago have resulted in much more than £IOO.OOO being raised. ‘ Mr Twomey was born in Wellington in 1892, and was educated at the Marist Brothers’ School and later at what was then the Newtown District High School. After leaving school he came to Christchurch and entered the employ of the Christchurch Gas Company. from which he retired four years ago to devote his full time towards assisting the lepers.
