INTEREST IN DRAMA
PLAN FOR DOMINION USE OF HOME TALENT v (F.A.) PALMERSTON N., Dec. 30. For the purpose of creating interest in the drama in New Zealand and the production of plays of real value, such as Shaw, Ibsen, Tchekhov, and Barrie, the prominent London producer, Dermot Cathie, is at present in Palmerston North with his wife, a well-known West End actress, who is a daughter of Mrs E. F. Nathan, of Palmerston North. “My view is that the public in New Zealand do not want to see whole casts of plays imported from England,'' feaid Mr Cathie. “There is a great deal of talent in New Zealand which could produce actors of real worth. That is the crux of the plan. What we want to do is to produce good plays, acted by New Zealanders of talent and ambition.” Mr Cathie’s most notable production was Ibsen's “Hedda Gabler” in 1942 at the Mercury and Westminster Theatres in London. He also produced Tchekhov’s “Uncle Vanya.” A capable actor, in 1943 he played Lord Brocklehurst in Barrie’s “Admirable Crichton.”
