ROAD ACCIDENTS
GOOD CHRISTMAS RECORD ONLY FOUR FATALITIES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. Only four road fatalities have been reported In New Zealand since Christmas Eve. Though the holiday road traffic has been the heaviest since 1939, so far this year it has been marked by fewer accidents than in pre-war years. In 1940, between December 24 and 28, holiday traffic deaths totalled 13. This report was made to-day by the Commissioner of Transport, Mr G. L. Laurenson. The position in New Zealand is contrasted with that in the United States, where the National Safety Council has reported what it terms “ a traffic binge,” resulting in 183 deaths by ldte on Christmas Day. It was evident from reports from different centres, Mr Laurenson said, that the majority of holiday-makers in New Zealand were co-operating with the traffic authorities in an effort to keep the highways safe. At New Year - the roads would again be thronged with traffic, but if the same standards of care and good driving were maintained it would be possible to look forward with confidence to an equally accident-free New Year holiday.
