Church of England Facing Financial Crisis

(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 29. The Archbishop of York, in his New Year Letter, says the church is in the midst of a financial crisis as a result of the redemption of the tithes, the abolition of mining royalties, the lower interest rate and the threatened loss of income through " what appears to be inadequate compensation for railway stock." He suggested improving the position by uniting more parishes to save man-power. Parishioners should leave the church more legagcies, and people should give to the church more regularly and more in relation to the changed values of money. "A copper coin these days should rarely be seen in the offertory plate," he said.
