HOTEL ABLAZE

WANGANUI LANDMARK GUESTS ESCAPE BY LADDERS (P.A,) WANGANUI, Dec. 30 Shortly after 10 o’clock tonight, the Rutland Hotel caught fire and the guests had to escape in their night attire as the old wooden building, one of the historic landmarks of the city, blazed fiercely. The Wanganui Fire Brigade, with five leads of hose and a pressure pump from the river two blocks away, fought the flames; but by 10.30 p.tn., a staircase leading from the bedrooms on the first floor was fully ablaze and impassable, and guests then in die building had to make use of the balconies and ladders put there by the fire brigade.
