COMMUNIST REJECTED MAJORITY FAIL TO VOTE (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 5. In the first of what may prove . a series of elections, the French Nations i Assembly yesterday rejected the candidature of the Communist leader. M Maurice Thorez, for the premiership The Paris correspondent of The Times says that, out of 579 votes recorded. 259 were for’M. Thorez, two for M. Le Troquer, who was not ip fact ■■ candidate, and 318 voting papers were returned blank. The bulk of the Soe ialist votes thus went to M. Thorez, as the previous night’s National Council of the Socialist Party had decided, while the M.R.P. and the Centre and Right Parties abstained. As constitutionally the Prime Minister must be elected by an absolute majority, all members of the Assembly voting or not voting, namely, by 310 votes. M. Thorez's candidature failed. The Assembly therefore adjourned until to-day, when other candidates will be presented.
