“TOO IMPRACTICAL”
WORLD FOOD BOARD ABANDONMENT PREDICTED (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 4. Mr S. M. Bruce, chairman of the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation, indicated that the proposals for a world food board were too impractical, and its objectives might have to be achieved by a slightly different route. Mr Bruce’s statement was the
first semi-official admission that the recommendations by Sir John Boyd Orr, director of the Food and Agricultural Organisation, for an international agency for aiding production and distribution of food and stabilising prices had been virtually abandoned by the Food and Agricultural Organisation. Mr Bruce explained that the sudden disappearance of supporters of the Orr plan, which was warmly and widely endorsed at the Copenhagen Food and Agricultural Organisation conference in September, was probably due to the fact that the plan had frightened some nations by proposing price stabilisation.
