TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel November 16 .. Metropolitan T.C. November 16 .. Southland R.C. (one event).

Jottings M. Holmes has now ’driven seven winners of the Derby Stakes. Acropolis paid over a quarter of a century for a place In the William Hayward Handicap. When Sea Max finished fourth in the Sockburn Handicap, she went 3min 30 4-ssec, which is 4-ssec better than the record for trotters for the distance. Sahara Queen had every chance in the Derby Stakes, but weakened when well into the last round. Apparently she is at her best up to 10 furlongs. Kildonnin ran his best race for some time in the Intermediate Handicap and hit out much more freely than he did on the second day of the Addington meeting. He is apparently coming back to form.

Toushay was travelling like a certain place getter in the Intermediate Handicap when he broke about half a mile from home. Josedale Grattan will remain at New Brighton after racing at Addington and do a light season at the stud. A Bill was due last month for presentation to the Victorian Parliament to transfer control of trotting and legalise night trotting In Victoria. Aberhall was got by Dillon Hall—Moradine, by Adioo Guy—Myolla, by O.Y.M.— Fritzella, by Fritz James. Turco was got by Rey de Oro—Wrackoda. by Wrack—Soda, by Harold Dillon — Franca, by Franz (brother to Fritz) — Hush, by Vancleve. Fiee Fight was got by Light BrigadeRustic Maid, by Rey de Oro—Country Belle, by Wlldmoor—Bonnie Belle, by Lincoln Yet from an Arab mard. Light Brigade, a son of Volomite. was Imported by Mr J. R McKenzie. The advance in stakes announced by the Fcrbury Park. Trotting Club will give general satisfaction. The suggestion that a soecial race be put on for three and four-year-olds Is interesting, and If this were done it would attract some of the best young horses in training and arouse widespread interest. Consistent Form Willie Winkle kept up his consistent form by finishing second In the Intermediate Handicap. He showed a fair burst of speed in the straight and was travelling over everything in the last half furlong. The Derby Winner Although he began from the second line. Free Fight was quickly In a good position in the Derby, and he was pacing so well that he looked the winner a long wav from home. Free Fight is a neatly turned colt by Light Brigade from Rustic Maid, and has a bright future. Began Smarjly Integrity began smartly in the Ollivier Handicap, but was racing three sulkies out most of the way. He went a very solid race, but he may have been feeling the effects of his hard race in the Cup, as he did not show his usual dash over the last little bit T-ftt"rt Solidly | Mistydale was confidently supported by the stable for the Intermediate Handicap at Addington, but the task set her can be gauged from the fact that the first mile was covered in 2min 13 3-ssec She trotted a solid race, but never got within striking distance of the leaders. A Smart Trotter In the Intermediate Handicap Rerewaka struck his gait quickly and was never further back than third in the running The Quite Sure gelding will reach much better company. Brilliant Performance In the November Handicap F. J. Smith drove a very confident race on the

winner, Bonnie Jack. The Auckland pacer was never In the call until about half a mile from home. She trailed Gold Peg Into the straight, and when brought out for a run at the leader she came home very gamely Some of the life had been taken out of the track by a shower, and her time of 4min 19sec was brilliant. The first mile was run in 2m'in 12 4-ssec and the mile and a-half in 3min 18sec Bores Badly

Quite Happy showed a lot of speed in the November Handicap after losing ground at the start, but she was boring badly and was beaten a dong way from home. She has a fine turn of speed, but it Is nullified by her tactics in a race. Every Chance Navigate had every chance in the William Hayward Handicap, being well placed in the early stages, but he was done with about a-quarter of a mile from home. Elation and Cameronian also drifted before the post came into sight. Badly Placed Josedale Grattan was badly placed during the running of the Ollivier Handicap, and put himself out of court by breaking about two furlongs from home. Prior to that, he had shown a tendency to leave his feet. .

Inter-Dominion Championships The New Zealand Trotting Association has received cabled advice that the president of the West Australian Trotting Association, Mr J. P. Stratton, will arrive in Christchurch this week to arrange details and interview owners about the Inter-Dominion Championships which his association,, proposes to hold in Perth in February. It is reported that the championship will' be decided by a series of heats, and that the prize-money for the final will be £BOOO. The Inter-Do-minion Championships which were held before the war did much to stimulate interest in the trotting sport, and if our best class pacers compete successfully at the coming championships the value of New Zealyand-bred trotting stock should be enhanced in Australia.
