SHORTAGE OF SHIRTS

ENGLISH PEOPLE PENALISED

“ I had hoped that we had come to the end of the tale of the shirt,” said Mr T. K S Sidey, National candidate for Dunedin Central, in the course of his address last night, “ but my opponent, Mr P G. Connolly, has definitely climbed down, and now is trying to extricate himself by raising side issues.” His audience would have noticed. Mr Sidey added, that the president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Fede ration had said: “We can furnish reliable information that the shirt supply position is more serious in Australia, Canada, England, and America than here ” It was obvious therefore, that the Government had not only sabotaged local industry and had imported goods which could have been made here, but it had also been prepared to deprive the people of England of shirts which they badly needed for themselves. The Government, and no one else, was responsible for the shortages in New Zealand.
