NOMINATIONS CLOSED

Complete List of Candidates

DUNEDIN DISTRICT ROLLS Voting Strength of 58,756 / f The nominations of candidates for the various electorates throughout the Dominion closed- at noon yesterday. For the 76 European seats 161 candidates are seeking the suffrage of the electors, and for the four Maori seats 11 aspirants are in the field, making a Dominion total of 172 nominees for the 80 seats. The North Island candidates number 115, and the South Island 57. Indicative of the straightout nature of the contest on the present occasion is the fact that in only 10 electorates have more than two candidates been nominated. The electoral rolls for the four Dunedin electorates have now been completed, and the district registrar of electors, Mr G. A. Hislop, said yesterday that it was hoped to have full supplies of supplementary rolls from the printer on Monday. In the meantime an advance supply of 200 copies of the’supplementary roll for each electorate has been received. These are being issued to the political parties, as they are more concerned than anyone else with the names of persons on the roll at the moment. On Monday copies of all supplementary rolls will be forwarded to all post offices and to other registrars of electors throughout New Zealand. Figures given below show the number of persons on the rolls of the four electorates, in comparison with the quota, but similar figures for the elections in 1943 are not a real guide to the position because many portions of the old electorates are now included in different electorates. The figures are as follows: —

In each case approximately 250 names were removed from the main' roll after it had been completed, and the total voting strength has been reduced accordingly. The total voting strengths for the four Dunedin electorates at the elections in 1943 were: North, 15,691? West, 15,317; Central, 15,907; South, 14,861. The grand total was 61,776.
