BORNEO DEATH MARCH

ASSISTANCE FROM NATIVES REWARDS TO BE GIVEN (Rec. 7 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 22. The Federal Government will reward Borneo natives for the help they gave to Australian war prisoners who made the infamous Randakan-Ranau death march in 1945. An officer will leave soon for Borneo with £3OO in Straits dollars for the natives, and will travel along the 123-mile death march route, where more than 1000 Australians died between May 29 and June 26, 1945. Only five Australians who made the march survived. The officer will give up to £5 each to natives who are holding pencilled notes given them by the prisoners they helped, and will take their fingerprints as receipts.
