Mr Newnham is to be chairman of the council. The following appointments to tire first and second divisions of the Court of Appeal were published in last night's Gazete:—First divisions The Chief Justice, Mr Justice O'Leary, Mr Justice Bair, Mr Justice Kennedy, Mr Justice Johnston, and Mr Justice Finlay. Second division: The Chief Justice, Mr Justice O’Leary, Mr Justice Smith, Mr Justice Fair, Mr Justice Callen, and ?Jr Justice Cornish. The congratulations of the Otago High Schools’ Board were extended to its secretary, Mr.sC. R. McLean, yesterday on ills appointment to the position of secretary to the Otago Education Board. The chairman of the board, Mr W. R. Brush, mentioned that Mr McLer.n’s wide knowledge of educational administration and his. 1 fine personal attributes had made him the “ ideal secretary ” during the past 27 vears. . The Rev. H. W. Newell, formerly Minister of the Terrace Congregational Chruch, Wellington, but now a Church of England clergyman, and for some years past the secretary of the National Council of Churches -in New Zealand, has been appointed assistant general secretary of the World Council of Churches, with headquarters at Geneva. He will leave early in the New Year to lake up the aDpointment. The Distinjftiisned Conduct Medal has been awarded to Warrant Officer II Garth T Seccombc. of the New Zealand Permanent Staff. W. 0.11 Seccombe. who is now instructing at the Army School, Trentham. left with the Second Echelon for the Middle East, where he was mentioned in 'despatches. He was reported missing in June. 1941. but later was found to be a prisoner of war in Greece, and was repatriated to the United Kingdom in 1945. Mr R G. Bricked, formerly of Dunedin, has been appointed as the first engineer of the recently-formed Southland Catchment Board. Mr Bricked, who was educated in Dunedin and at Canterbury University College, went overseas in 1936, and served with the Air Ministry as an engineer. He was engaged in aerodrome construction work throughout the war, and reached the rank of wing commander. He was finally attached to the headquarters of the Southeast' Asia Command. He returned to New Zealand last year and has since been employed with the Department of Works. Passengers who left by air for the north yesterday were: Mr W. Cowdery and Mr L. Rowe, for Christchurch; Captain D R. Henderson. Miss A. Gunn. Miss D McClelland, Miss M. Morrison, Mrs P. V Morrison, Mr J. Anderson, Mr S. L Fie ning, Mr McPherson for Wellington'. Miss A Robbie for Palmerston North; Mr Pricknell, Mr S. C Sutton. Mr J. Glemcfor Auckland. Those who arrived Horn the north were: Mr J. Hainsworth, Mr H. T Speight, Mrs E. E. Hassal. Mr J. Black. Mrs P Hawksworth, Mr Warnock. Mr and Mrs Johnston, and Mr S. Paine. Passengers for the south were: Mr J. Bowles, Mr D. Paterson, Mr P. E. Wanklyn Mrs L. Rowell, Mr C. R. Hart. Mr J. Walker. Mrs M. Francis, and Mr D. Wilkins.
