ELECTRONICS INSTITUTE

MEETING OF DUNEDIN BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Electronics Institute was held on Thursday last. Mr W. L. Shiel presided, and associated with him were Mr W. G. Collett (instructor in radio and electronics at the King Edward Technical College) and Mr J. S. Coombs (lecturer in physics at Otago University). There were also present representatives of all branches of the radio, electrical, and electronic trades and professions. After the general business of the institute had been dealt with, two subjects of a technical nature were introduced, and a full and lively discussion on each cf these ensued. The questions asked were:—(l) "Would this institute, as a body, voice an opinion as to the form of training which should be followed by voung electronic engineers?” (2) "What are the possibilities of- the introduction of the system of frequency modulation as the standard method of radio transmission in New Zealand? ” It is the princiDle function of the tnsUtute to bring together in close association all those engaged in dealing with the flow of electrons (electric current) in no matter what form, be it through wires, a vacuum, or through the ether, so that the individual problems of each may be made known to the other for the general advancement of the science. When it is remembered that radio and electricity play such an intimate part in almost every home in New Zealand, it will be realised that this institute may well become a useful instrument for the encouragement and development of the highest ideals of human invention and endeavour in the fields of the electronic. The Dunedin branch was formed, in September last, and there are indications already that It is destined to fulfil a useful purpose.
