GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL DISPLAY A VARIED PROGRAMME An outstanding performance of group work in music, physical education and verse speaking was presented by pupils of the Otago Girls’ High School in His Majesty’s Theatre last night before a packed house. . ' The first item was a march, ’ Valiant Knight," played by the school orchestra. The third forms then presented three folk songs, colour being lent by folk dancers in . picturesque peasant costume. “ March,” from " Tannhauser,” by Wagner, a duo for two pianos, was played by V. Wilkinson, H. Robertson, M. Bell and P. Donaldson, who maintained the dignity ■ and beauty of the composition with only some very slight hesitancy in fingering. The fourth forms then gave an exhibition of agility work, using benches and stools, which produced applause and some consternation in the audience. The cool, fresh voices of the school choir were heard in two and three-part songs, “An Elghtsome Reel," by Cuthbert Forster, “The Cuckoo Clock,” by Grant Schaefer, and " Little Papoose in the Wind-swung Bough,” by Cadman. . ... ■ , " Sailors’ Song to the Diosuri,” by Schubert, “ The Drummer and the Cook,” and ” The Ride of the Witch ” were then sung by the combined fourth and fifth forms. " Romance.” by Mozart, was played by V. Wilkinson (piano). J. Napier (violin) and B. Napier (’cello), followed by an exhibition of rhythmical bean-bag throwby the senior forms. A verse-speaking choir then recited ’• There Shall Come Soft Rain ” and “ Dirge for a Soldier,” by Whitman, “ The Cherry Tree,” by A. E. Housman. and "Tarantella," by Hilaire Belloc, with great clarity of diction. The senior dance group, attractively costumed, presented some graceful dance movements, and the finale came with the massed choirs impressively singing “ Tell England,” by T. F. Dunhlll, and " The Splendour Falls.” by Ellen Cowdell. The accompanists were B. Sheard. G. Smith and M. Cartwright.
