Kaitangata Golfer Wins Sports Trust Cup

The Stead Cup Open Golf Tournament, which was held at Queen’s Park, Invercargill, recently, attracted a record entry of Otago and Southland women golfers. The B grade trophy, the Sports Trust Cup, was won by Mrs J. Foxton (Kaitangata), who, in a well contested final, defeated Mrs C. W. Francis by 2 and 1. Mrs Foxton qualified first in the B grade with rounds of 103 and 104, and she was at the top of her form when she met Mrs Francis in the match play final. Mrs Francis won the first two holes, but lost the fourth and seventh, and they turned for home with everything to play for Mrs Foxton look the

lead for the first time with a win at the tenth. Three halves followed, and Mrs Foxton became two up with a win at the fourteenth. The fifteenth was halved in high figures, then Mrs Francis got one back at the sixteenth. A three to Mrs Foxton at the next hole gave her the match by 2 and 1. New Life-saving Canoe for St. Clair The success which has attended the operation of the St. Clair Life Saving Club’s canoe, “ Duke,” during ' the past season has inspired a group of keen members to commence the building of another canoe of the same class. . Mr H. D. (“ Duke ”) Gillies, captain of the club, who is the newly-elected president of the Otaeo Surf Association, was the designer of the original canoe, and he has slightly modified the plans, being of opinion that the new canoe will be able to Show its wake to its prototype. With an over-all length of IS feet, it. will be c >x inches larger than the “ Duke.” The moulded depth is the same, but the plans allow for one more stringer on either side, with a resultant smoother skin. The centre watertight compartment will be 12 inches wide instead of six, allowing for more storage room. The timber used will be Oregon throughout. The stem and stem posts have already been fitted to the keel, the moulds are in position and the top strakes attached. The club has provided a fine work bench and chest of tools, enabling its members to make themselves proficient in the fascinating hobby of boat building and to provide an interesting activity during the off season. It is expected that the new craft, a suggested name for which is “ The Duchess,” will be completed for trials before Christmas, and keen rivalry between the “Duke” and “Duchess'’ is likely to develop. At least five other surf canoes of the “Duke” class are building throughout New Zealand, including one for the Oreti Life Saving Club. The original “Duke” has been thoroughly overhauled and repainted in readiness for the opening of the St. Clair Club s season on November 10. THE ART OF FISHING This year the sport of angling has again attracted a large number of new followers. Some of these newcomers arc boys-, and a good many are somewhat older—the Otago Acclimatisation Society’s policy of offering free licences to ex-servicemen having resulted m bringing into the fold a section of learners who might not otherwise have taken up the sport. All of these tyros—young and olderwili find that there is a great deal to learn. Angling does not consist of a few simple motions to be learned in three easy lessons. Indeed, there are many aspects of it which will be appreciated early through the expedient of long, and sometimes bitter, experience. Sufficient of the art of weilding a rod expertly can be attained by trial and error, but all learners, and more especially the younger ones, would be well advised to make their early trials in the company of experienced anglers. This will ensure early correction of the faults which, if unchecked, may well develop into habits difficult of eradication. Some sacrifice of personal pleasure must necessarily be involved on the part of anglers who undertake to guide the novice hand, but any such sacrifice will be in an excellent cause.
