“SQUATTERS” IN STORE

UNOBTRUSIVE TENANCY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 16. Auckland had its “squatters” long before London’s accommodation jumpers made front page news. Washing on a line has led to their discovery. They are Mr and Mrs William Blake, who, with their three-year-old son, have been occupying for the past five months two small offices in the corner of one of two large storage sheds built during the war on the waterfront for the American forces. They state that they applied unsuccessfully for seven year'' for a State house, and moved into the building when the Wheat Commission finished using it as a store. “ I had nowhere to go, and did not want to bring my boy up in the streets,” said Mr Blake, who added that he was not very happy about then improvised home. The family’s presence in the building was disclosed at a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board, when a member said he had noticed washing drying on a line in the building.
