GUIDE TO DUNEDIN
BEVERLY-BEGG OBSERVATORY, ROSLYN.—This astronomical observatory is open each Saturday evening from 7.30 (overhead conditions permitting) from April to September. Its equipment includes a fine 12-inch reflector telescope. Take the Kaikorai or Maori Hill bus to the junction. The observatory is situated across the Robin Hood sports ground. OTAGO MUSEUM.—King street. Hours: week days, 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 to 4 p.m. The Otago Museum is developing a collection of pottery, china, and porcelain, showing Oriental forms, but more particufarly the domestic wares of Great Britain. GOLF COURSE.—The Ocean Beach municipal golf course of 18 holes situated near the terminus of the St. Kilda (No. 7 tram), is available for the use of the public on payment of a small green fee. PUBLIC LIBRARY.— Moray place west. Hours: Week days; 9.30 a.m. to 9.30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Display tables this week feature books on William Blake, Gertrude Stein, Lewis Carroll, Blake prints, Gauguin prints, Manet prints, birds, geology, world food problem, women of to-day, Turkey and the Dardanelles, and Warren Hastings. ART GALLERY.— Logan Park. (Buses leave from Jacobs’s Corner at 6 and 38 minutes past the hour.) In the large collection of portraits and landscapes in the gallery are some fine examples of the work of the follownig well-known artists:—Orpen, McEvoy, Augustus John, Arnesby, Brown, Munnings, and Brangwyn. SCENIC WALK.—Take the No. 2 tram to the Normanby terminus and follow the Main North road to the Brown House. From this point there is a wide panoramic view of the city, and from a short . distance further on there is a splendid view of the Lower Harbour and the Heads. Return by the Main road as far as the Brown House and then take the road leading off to the right back to the Nor- . manbv tram terminus. Time required, approximately two hours and a-half. EARLY SETTLERS’ MUSEUM—Lower High street. Hours: Week days, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will find the museum a storehouse of interesting relics of the early days. On display there is a collection of paintings by George O'Brien., OBSERVATION TOURS.—Tours around the Otago Peninsula are available by buses which leave the Municipal Chambers in the Octagon at 2 p.m. to-day and 2.15 p.m. to-morrow. On Sunday afternoon a tour of Signal Hill and around Dunedin is available by buses leaving the Municipal Chambers at 2.15 p.m. A drive around the harbour bays to Harrington Point is available by buses leaving the Queen's Gardens at 2 p.m. to-day and 2.30 p.m to-morrow. BOTANIC GARDENS.—North Dunedin (tram 2,4, or 12). The tea kiosk is the Upper Gardens is open every afternoon except Friday. In the Winter Gardens, cyclamen and Begonia manicata are in bloom.
