MAORI UNIT

DOMINION DEFENCE FORCE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. The proposal that there should be a distinct Maori unit in the New Zealand defence forces—a suggestion first made at New Plymouth a few weeks ago—met with an enthusiastic reception at the conference of senior officers of the Maori Battalion in Wellington yesterday. The Maoris were just as entitled to such representation, it was submitted, as the Scottish, who had a unit of their own.

The suggestion will be placed before the tribes, but those who have already discussed it are favourable.
