OBITUARY

MR EDWARD BUTCHER With the recent death of Mr Edward Butcher at the age of 93 years there passed one of the pioneer railway employees of the Otago district. Born at Leamington, England, he emigrated at an early age and landed at Port Chalmers, where, after 3 period of contracting work with the early railway surveyors, he joined the permanent staff of the department and saw the first lines opened for traffic in the district. Later, on the opening of the south line he was transferred to the Lovells Flat-Benhar section, where he speht a long period. With the exception of five years in Kaipara, North Auckland, all his service with the department was on various sections in Otago and Southland, He retired in 1914 and was for some years a member of the Caledonian Bowling Club. His wife died in 1919, and he is survived by two daughters and one son.
