TWO CONFERENCES
TALKS ON PALESTINE ~
NO COMMON VIEWPOINTS
(kec. 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 28. Although the London conference on Palestine will be opening on September 9, it is at present indicated that it will not take the form of a round-table conference, says the Press Association. It is expected that the Jews and Arabs will ask for parallel conferences, and unless what appear to be almost insuperable obstacles are brushed aside, there is not much likelihood of bringing them together for a common contribution to a solution of the problem.
The Daily Herald’s political correspondent says the United States declined a British invitation to send observers to the conference on Palestine.
A message from Jerusalem states that Sixth Airborne troops cordoned off two villages near Gaza and began a search for arms.
British troops found a diving suit and 300 passports of various nationalities during a search of the Jewish settlement of Sdoth-Yom. The search has now ended. Fifty-nine males of the settlement who were detained yesterday have been released, while 33 men and two women are still held.
