MOSGIEL BUSINESS MEN

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION Mr J. J. Thomson (president) was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Mosgiel Business Men’s Association. There was a fair attendance of members, and the annual report and balance sheet were adopted. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman said that the quickly changing and difficult conditions generally had somewhat handicapped the association during the year under review. As a result of the movement started by the Wrestling Club, with the support of the association and numerous other bodies in the town, an attempt had been made to bring about the establishment of a community centre as a war memorial, and though an interim committee had been set up to go Into details and report back to the public in six months, nothing had yet been heard of the committee’s findings. The Association had been responsible for the coloured lighting of the streets during the summer holiday season. The effect obtained had been well worth the outlay—some £2O. The balance sheet showed a considerable sum handed over to the Soldiers’ Presentation Fund, and assistance had been given in the purchase of a tractor, as well as books, for the local high school. Steps had been taken for an augmented bus service through the town on Fridays and for a reduction in the fare from the township corner to the junction station These matters were now under consideration. Thanks were expressed to the ladies and to all who had assisted the association in its activities. Proposals for improvements to the borough, including a children’s playground in the Gordon Road Park, and for activities for the coming year, including a Mosgiel picnic, were discussed and referred to the incoming committee. It was decided to make a presentation to the retiring secretary (Mr F„ Cheyne) as a mark of appreciation of his valuable services during his term of office. The following office-bearers were elected:—Patron, the mayor (Mr W. P Hartstonge); president. Mr R. Holland; vice-president, Mr T. G. Boyd; auditor, Mr J. Walker; committee—Messrs J. J. Thomson, A. J. Souter, A. Chadwick D. McKenzie, T. J. Finnie, D. Evans, E Cooper, J. Revill, J. Leith, A. Hutchison, and J R. Munro; secretary-treasurer. Mr C. G. Lucas.
