PRICES GENERALLY FIRM
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 28 The entry of store sheep at the Addington sale to-day was 1448 —575 hdggets and 873 ewes and wethers. Buyers did not bid freely, and adult sheep prices were a shade easier, but hoggets of good quality made to last week’s rates. A lmc of two and four-tooth open-woolled ewes made 35s 3d. and a good line of six and eight-tooths 30s. Medium sorts sold from 24s 6d to 275; inferior, from 13s 6d; best ewe hogeets, 31s 6d to 33s 9d; good ewe hoggets, 26s 5d to 27s 3d; medium, to 24s 6d; best wether hoggets, to 22s Id. The fat hogget entry totalled 341. lhe quality was high, and values showed an advance of Is to 2s a bead. Several larger lines were forward. Values. Extra prime, to 43s 7d; prime, 37s 6d to 40s fid, good. 31s Od to 36s 6d: medium and light, 21s 7d to 29s 6d. . The fat sheep entry of 4000 was of a high general quality, particularly in the ewe section The sale opened firmly, and values for ewes were 2s a head better. Plain and unfinished wethers caused the market to, drag at times Halfway through the sale, however, ewes firmed further, at times to 4s a head. Good wethers were slightly firmer until the last two races, when a general easing set in, and prices fell back sharply to last week's values. Values; Extra prime heavy wethers, to 57s Id; extra prime, 34s to 40s 6d, prime medium-weight, 28s 6d to 33s 6d; ordinary and light, 21s to 275; extra prime ewes, to 33s'id; prime, 23s to 275; medium. 14s 6d to 225; light. 8s 6d to 13s. The fat cattle entry of 471 included a big proportion of steers in excellent condition. Heifers and cows were not so plentiful and these experienced a better market than for some weeks. The quality was good, but the sale dragged in the early stages. Steers were down by more than 10s, but the market Improved towards the end There was a firm tone in the buying of cows and heifers throughout. Butchers did not appear to be operating heavily and top price for steers was £27 17s 6d; heifers, £2O 12s 6d; and for cows, £l9 12s 6d Best beef made to 60s per 1001 b; good, 46s to 545; medium. 32s 6d to 42s 6d; best cow beef, to 42s 6d, secondary cow beef, to 36s (all per ,}oolb)__ Values: Extra prime heavy steers, to £27 17s 6d; prime, £l9 to £22 10s; prime medium-weight, £l4 to £18; light, £ll 10s to £l3 10s; extra prime heifers, to £2O 12s 6d; prime, £l3 to £l6 17s 6d, medium and light, £7 to £l2; extra prime cows to £l9 12s 6d: prime. £9 to £ll 10s; medium and light, £7 to £8 10s. In the fat pig section the entry of porkers was again small. All suitable classes met good competition and last week's good rates were fully maintained The chopper entry was much smaller and values were better by £2 a head. The bacon entry was much larger, and lightweight baconers did not maintain the prices reached for heavy porkers. Good quality heavy-weights were 5s to 10s a head easier on last week's rates The average price per lb was 9d to 93d.
