NOTES FROM RICCARTON

PECULATE IN WORK

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 28. We have run into a patch of wild weather. A cold southerly wind brought rain, light showers at first, but developing gradually into a wintry downpour yesterday. It lasted without much break through the night and there is little sign of improvement to-day. As a result, training operations at Riccarton have received a check. The tracks were closed this morning and though some of the trainers sent their teams out for road exercise, many of the horses were kept in their boxes.

R. Register will leave to-morrow night for a holiday in the North Island. He will be at Foxton on Saturday to ride Ring Scarf in the Steeplechase, and on his form here, when second in the Hunt Cup, he should run prominently. G. Ridgway has Peculate back in work and she looks very well after her spell. She raced consistently last season, without much luck, as though she had only one win, she was eight times second. With better fortune, she may go on to a good record during this season. H. Nurse has Lord Advocate back in his active team and he has freshened up with his rest. He won a race at Ashburton nearly a year ago but that was his only appearance in the money in eight starts last season.

A. B. Stove has an addition to his team, a four-year-old mare named Scene. She is by Nightly and her dam is by Jericho from Fal Lai.

Leigh Note has gone lame and A. B, Stove has had to spell her.
