Sober Thought for America
OTHER NATIONS RESENTFUL Russia Forced Into Open (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 26. The newspaper P.M., in an editorial deploring the flare-up between America and Jugoslavia, says: “Let there be no misunderstanding how American Liberals feel about Jugoslavia’s immoral, indefensible, stupid action in shooting down our planes, but with all our national anger and pride let us not make the mistake of believing our power will solve our world problems. “America’s power, because of its bigness, is resented in many quarters. While we forced Jugoslavia to make amends we have not convinced its leaders and people, and have not won their friendship. “The tragic fact is that the affair set back the cause of peace immeasurably. It caused Russia to speak out in defence of its satellite, thus making Jugoslavia’s cause its own. Even more it stiffened our determination to resist the Russian viewpoint all down the line. “ The affair has given a new emphasis to our approach to Middle East problems, which we now view strictly from the standpoint of power politics instead of justice or commonsense.”
