FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

An enjoyable social hour was spent by members of the Winter Activities Committee and members of Triumph Lodge of the Protestant Alliance. The evening took the form of a progressive euchre tournament, after which supper was served. The chairman, in thanking Triumph Lodge, said he hoped the evening would have the effect of inducing members to attend their meetings. He also pointed out that the next night would be a “ trump whist" evening in the Manchester Unity Hall, Stuart street, on August 29. DRUIDISM A.D. Bro. H. J. Smaill presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the fortnightly meeting of Bay Lodge. Lily of the Valley Lodge extended an invitation for the members to attend a social evening on September 4. An invitation was also received from Court Woodlands Pride Lodge, A.0.0.F., for members to attend a social evening, but unfortunately the date of the evening coincides with the quarterly meeting of Bay Lodge. At the close of business a table tennis competition was held, and was won by Bro. C. Jones (Royal Oak). A.D. Bro. A. R. Rankin presided over the fortnightly meeting of ' the Lily of the Valley Lodge. A visiting party from West Harbour Lodge was welcomed. After the meeting members were entertained at a social and dance.

Acting Arch Druid Bro. T. W. Dove presided over a well-attended meeting of Otago Lodge held in the Kalkorai Band Rooms. Routine business was carried out and £3O sick pay was pased for payment. Grand President Bro. H. A. Tyrrell and members of the Board of Management, along with about 40 members of other dodges, were entertained at progressive euchre. Supper was served after a successful evening. The fortnightly meeting of the Pride of Mornington Lodge was held at the Mornlngton Tram Sheds. After the business was completed the lodge adjourned to entertain visitors from Lily of the Valley, Ivanhoe, Otago, and Linden Lodges, the evening taking the form of progresisve euchre. Twelve games were played and Bros. A. E. Jelley, of Linden, and D. Harbour, of the Otago Lodge, proved to be winners, winning nine games each. Bro. W. Duff, of Linden, secured the “ booby ” prize. P.A. Bro. D. Y. Miller, of Linden, presented the prizes and congratulated Pride of Mornington on arranging such a pleasant evening. Supper was then served.

Ivanhoe Lodge has *of late been very busy on the social side of the Order, and has entertained the juvenile lodges. It also held a successful ladles’ evening, which took the form of-a dance, with vocal interludes, while cards were on side tables for those who did not dance. At the last meeting a new member was initiated. The ceremony was carried out by A.D. Bro. Simon and officers, and members spoke afterwards of the excellent rendering of the charges by all the officers. Sick pay is a heavy expense at the present time, and the bards spend a lot of their spare time in visiting sick brethren. Auditors- were appointed, P.A. Bro. Cannon and P.D.P. Bro. Faulds being elected. Routine business carried the lodge until 10 p.m., when the steward handed round supper. Cards were then played until 11 o’clock. The lodge is the holder of the Euchre Shield, and invites other lodges In No. 1 district to challenge for it. At a later date the lodge proposes holding a social evening in, honour of returned servicemen, and a committee has been appointed to arrange a programme. The fortnightly meeting of Royal Oak Lodge was presided over by V-A. BrOr King. A smaller number of members than usual was present. Bro. Hudson, from Wellington, was a welcome visitor. A number of invitations to social functions was received and accepted. D.P. ■Bro. Dickson mentioned visiting various lodges in the district and spoke especially of the manner in which West Harbour lodges in th edistrlct and spoke especiOrder In order to get the finals of the Friendly Societies’ Bowling tournament completed the lodge stood adjourned till next lodge night. A.D. Bro. H. R. Walker presided over a good attendance of members at the last meeting of the West Harbour Lodge. The members paid a tribute to the excellent work of-the U.F.S. Winter Activities Committee. Invitations were accepted to visit Court Woodlands Pride, Lily of the Valley Lodges for social evenings, and the lodge is arranging a visit to All Nations Lodge, Port Chalmers, on September 17, The lodge adjourned for cards, when Bro Walker took the opportunity of thanking lady members for their work for the Lodge and Sisters Connor and Paterson for providing refreshments for the last two nights. Well attended by officers, members and ii s it ors ’ the fortnightly meeting of Linden Lodge was interesting and entertaining. The routine business was quickly concluded and invitations to sister lodges were accepted. Two proposals for membership were received. Debate was keen on a variety of subjects, and decisions were made on matters which should prove of benefit to the lodge. The evening was concluded with a social hour of cards. An itinerary of visits arranged by the Arch Druid was accepted, and support was promised in fostering the social side of . lodge work. Grand Lodge wifi officially visit at the next meeting. Enterprise Lodge held its quarterly meeting with a good attendance of members and visitors. As soon as the lodge opened GJP Bro. Tyrrell, accompanied by Grand Lodge and Board of Management members, paid an official visit. They were accorded a warm welcome. After the bards’ report on sick members, the sum of £33 18s 4d was passed for payment. Invitations were accepted from Lily of the Valley and Pride of'Mornington Lodges. Donations were given to tne U.F.S. Social Committee and the Makogai Leper Fund. The Arch Druid called on Bro. Tyrrell to present Bro. W. Workman with a P.D.P, collar for his services as district president. A P.A. collar was presented to Bro. C. Hopkins, and both Bros, responded. The toast of the Grand Lodge and Board of Management was given by P.A. Bro. A. T. Workman, G.P. Bro. Tyrrell and P.A. Bro. Miller responding and giving a detailed account of the board’s work. After the visitors responded supper was served. FORESTERS

The last meeting of Court Pride of the Leith was opened in mourning. Regret was expressed at the loss the court had suffered by the death of Bro. James Mudie, and sympathy with the relatives was expressed. The sickness experienced 1 at the present time is very heavy, ’and a large amount of claims was passed for payment. The visitors were accorded a welcome bylthe C.R., Bro. A. R. Wright, and the toast was responded to by P.CJJ. Bro. J. T. Wilson on behalf of Court Excelsior. Before the close of business the nomination of a candidate was accepted and approved. At the close of the meeting sister courts were entertained with dancing, and an enjoyable evening was spent. JUVENILE FORESTERS

The monthly meeting of Court Pride of the Valley, juveniles, attached to Court Pride of the Leith, was held on Saturday last, with a good attendance. The transfer of a youthful member from Court Excelsior's Pride was accepted. Members were asked to pay an official visit to Court Maid Marian on September 19. The officers of the Juvenile Council were accorded a welcome, and on behalf of that body, the vice-president. Sister G. Soliitt, presented the court with the Benfell Memorial Shield for the success of the court in the general efficiency competition. After the meeting the secretary entertained the members with a talk on “ Our Empire,” and the navy and army and air force, illustrated by suitable slides.

The monthly meeting of Court Progress was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall at Forbury Corner. There was a fair attendance of officers and members. The Woodwards reported that there were no sick members •on the fist. As there were no new candidates, a mock initation was held There were two members present from the adult court. St. Andrew’s. The C.R. welcomed them, and Bro. F. Brixton replied. After the meeting the members played badminton and quoits. The Juvenile Council held its quarterly meeting in the A.O.F. district office. Reports of the last installation and ritual competition, the swimming carnival and the presentation of shields were received. Arrangements were made for the installations which will take place next October. It was arranged that the annual Soccer and basketball tournaments be held at Milton on Saturday, October 5.
